October 2016 Power-to-Liquids – Potentials and Perspectives for the Future Supply of Renewable Aviation Fuel. The 2015 Paris Agreement requires massive greenhouse gas emission reductions in all sectors by mid-century. Renewable fuels are a major building block to achieve substantial absolute emission reductions in aviation. The study gives an introduction into the novel concept of producing renewable jet fuel using renewable electricity, so-called Power-to-Liquids (PtL). The PtL production pathways and the drop-in capability are explained and comparative performances are discussed in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiencies, costs, water demand and land requirements. The study was jointly prepared by Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH (LBST) and Bauhaus Luftfahrt e.V., both located near Munich, Germany. The study was published on the occasion of 39th ICAO General Assembly 2016: Umweltbundesamt (UBA).

February 2016 Power-to-gas: Short term and long term opportunities to leverage synergies between the electricity and transport sectors. A joint study for the French Tuck Foundation LBST with its partner Hinicio assess potential opportunities leverage synergies between the electricity, the transport, and industry sectors through the use of power-to-gas technology with renewable electricity. The assessment includes technical and economic considerations with a geographical scope on France and Germany. LBST provided Germany specific inputs on regulatory, technology, and economy. A particular application case assessed the potential of green hydrogen as a feedstock for refineries, analysing resulting renewable power demands, electrolyser cost reduction, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and impact on conventional fuel costs.

January 2016 Renewables in Transport 2050 – Empowering a sustainable mobility future with zero emission fuels from renewable electricity – Europe and Germany. A study by LBST mandated by and in collaboration with the Research Association for Combustion Engines e.V. (FVV).
Three explorative fuel/drive scenarios (PTL, FVV, eMob) were defined and combined with two distinct transportation demand scenarios (HIGH, LOW) comprising all major vehicle categories (cars, buses, trucks, trains, ships, planes). The primary energy base for the fuels was modelled as a target scenario, assuming a 100% renewable supply base by 2050 and focusing on renewable electricity for battery-electric vehicles and overhead lines, and PtH2, PtCH4, as well as PtL for fuel cell-electric and internal combustion engine (hybrid) vehicles. An LBST-model calculated the resulting fuel demands, renewable electricity demands, fuel production and distribution costs, fuel-related greenhouse gas emission avoidance costs, and the cumulated investments until 2050 for an energy transition in transport.

December 2015 Study on Hydrogen from Renewable Resources in the EU. Hydrogen can be produced from a broad range of renewable energy sources, providing low or zero emission energy to all energy consuming sectors. At present, the technology of choice to produce renewable ‘green’ hydrogen is water electrolysis using renewable electricity. This study focuses on renewable hydrogen generation other than electrolysis, describing the technologies involved, characterising their technical capabilities, maturity, and economic performance, and assessing their future potential.

February 2015 Plan-DelyKaD Study on the planning of a demonstration plant for hydrogen fuel production by electrolysis with intermediate storage in salt caverns under pressure. In a two year research project the long-term storage of hydrogen as energy carrier has been assessed in detail for large renewable electricity quantities in underground storage caverns in Germany. Next to a regions analysis for potential storage sites, the benchmarking against other large scale storage concepts, a comparative and perspective analysis of alkaline and PEM-electrolysers also potential business cases for Power-to-Hydrogen in the mobility sector as well as for the chemical, electricity and natural gas industry have been analysed. The study which has been funded by the federal German Ministry for the Environment was coordinated by the German Institute for Aerospace and Space (DLR), Institute for Technical Thermodynamics, and next to Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik partnered with The Fraunhofer-Institute for Solar Energy Systems (FhG-ISE) and Kavernenbau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Underground Technologies (KBB). Mai 2014 Power-to-Gas (PtG) in transport - Status quo and perspectives for development. A short study by German institutes LBST, IFEU, DLR, and DBFZ in the framework of the Scientific Advisory to the Federal Mobility and Fuels Strategy (MFS) to the German Transport Ministry (BMVI). The study investigates, how, when, to what extent and with which climate- and environmental impacts PtG fuels can be used in transport. In addition, the study focuses on the energy system to which PtG provides new opportunities and challenges. .

August 2013 Transfer of results from GermanHy into the emission calculation model TREMOD – Summary of the Final Report. The study was commissioned by the German National Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW) and has been undertaken by IFEU, LBST, ISI, Wuppertal Institut, and BASt. The objective of this study has been to enhance capabilities of the transport emission calculation model TREMOD by adding electricity and hydrogen on the transport fuel side as well as fuel cell, battery, and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the vehicles side. For this, the German roadmap for hydrogen in transport (GermanHy, 2009) was taken as a starting base. (Available in German only)
